Match Report: Durham 3 - 0 Newcastle

roryengland

Following an opening day defeat away to Stirling, Durham were in dire need of a win as Newcastle made their way to Maiden Castle, desperate for a result themselves after their 6-1 loss at the hands of Durham last year.

The starting XI saw a number of changes from the previous week’s fixture with Jonah Blake, Alex Costa, and Ollie Flint coming in as well as numerous positional changes with Jack Gibbons being moved out wide and Jack Camarda coming into the midfield.

As the game began, it was clear that Durham were hungry to make a fast start, and only 2 minutes into the game, a dangerous free kick on the edge of the Newcastle box was drilled into the bottom corner by Jack Camarda to put Durham 1-0 up.

The early goal sparked Newcastle into action, and a period of pressure almost saw the away side find an equaliser if it were not for some Reuben Bull heroics and brave defending.

However, the Newcastle pressure came to nothing and Durham slowly began to grab a hold on the game. Mid-way through the half, a well-worked move down the right found Jack Gibbons who drove into the box and was taken down to win Durham a clear penalty. Having won it, Gibbons stepped up and hit it low to the Newcastle goalkeeper’s left who got down well and kept the score at 1-0.

Newcastle could not keep the score at 1-0 for long though, as another Jack Camarda free kick was swung in and evaded both the Durham and Newcastle players to awkwardly bounce in front of the goalkeeper and into the top right corner to send Durham in at half time with a 2-0 lead.

With Durham firmly in control, Newcastle needed to come out of the traps flying and that they did. With the wind now going their way, the Durham back line came under siege with long ball after long ball. A number of chances throughout the half came to nothing for Newcastle as the Durham back 3 of Jonah Blake, Chris Wild, and Ellis Challinor stood firm with Reuben Bull making a number of impressive saves to carry on his recent good form.

With Newcastle searching for a way back into the game, Durham sniffed opportunities on the counter attack with chances all coming for Ned Ventham, Zach Alfalahi and Ben Jones, who hit a tremendous effort off of the Newcastle bar.

After a solid second-half defensive performance, Durham punished Newcastle’s openness late on as Ben Jones switched a lovely ball out to Zach Alfalahi who duly tucked the ball into the bottom left corner to seal the game for Durham.

As the final whistle blew, the 3-0 result seemed flattering for Newcastle and on another day it could have been more. The win will give Durham confidence going into 2 tough away fixtures in the next 2 weeks and will hopefully kickstart what is to be an exciting season for Durham.
