There was great optimism amongst the group, heading into Wednesday evening’s encounter with Shildon AFC Reserves and after the first 3 games there was real ambition to kick on and make an impact in the Wearside League.

After an even start, Durham started to build some sustained pressure with both Harry Glassey and Jack Gibbons going close. Roughly half an hour into the game, Durham’s forward line started to click, and the deadlock was broken after Rory England lifted the ball over the Shildon defence for Joe Bryant round the keeper before slotting home from an acute angle. The floodgates were open. Durham made it 3 in 4 minutes, with England at the double thanks to some incredible playmaking from Gibbons. Shildon were starting to get agitated, and their misery was compounded as Jack Hall turned 3G3 into a dancefloor after adding a 4th. Number 5 soon followed as the front 4 all linked up on the counterattack with Gibbons feeding Ned Ventham who took both the last man and goalkeeper out of the game with a trademark filthy first touch before rolling the ball into an unguarded net. At this point, the visitors were starting to lose their heads at the referee after certain decisions went against them – a foreseeable red card came just before half time after Ventham was brought down in the box. After a period of complaining and discussion, which saw several Shildon players get their names in the book, Gibbons slotted home the resultant penalty to round off a scintillating first half.

What then ensued was not something that anyone wanted to see, with the away side refusing to take the field for the 2nd half on the grounds of poor officiating and the game was abandoned. However, nothing should take away from the outstanding showing that our lads provided.
